Year: Three

Wednesday, April 5, 2006

Actually, the date above should have been “March 14, 2006″, because that is the day, which makes this blog a 3 years old.

Some two months ago, when this place was hosted on Diary-X, I had put on a I-shall-be-back notice on this blog/diary/journal/whatever, because there were some other things I had to take care of. I was hoping that I would finish those other things properly and quickly, and then return to this ulta seedha corner and start posting again (once in a month). Things were going as they were planned by me to go, when suddenly, two things happened:

  1. I came to know that there are a lot more other things that need to be taken care of by me, and
  2. Diary-X crashed. Without any data backup.

Needless to say, I reached heaven.

But soon, I had to come down on earth. The things I had to take care of kept on moving on their own pace, while I kept on thinking about the decision of to-blog-or-not-to-blog. Then one day, I searched through the caches of Yahoo! and MSN Search, and the decision was made. To blog.

Although all data was lost on diary-X, copies of many posts were there in the caches of above mentioned search engines. Also, since the comments were handled by Enetation (a service with which I have a true love-hate relationship), I was able to retrieve and save them on my machine too. And thus began the work on a new version of Ulta Seedha, which is being visited by you now.

There are so many things that need to be done or fixed in this version, and I just hope that they don’t create much problems for you all. I might even change the whole layout after some time (except, yes, the apples). Feel free to report as many errors or bugs as you can, it would be highly appreciated.

And now to the 3rd year of this blog. On the previous two blogiversaries, I had posted some ultay seedhay stats, telling which post was the shortest and longest, and the duration of breaks I had had, and etc. I was looking forward to do the same for this post too, but unfortunately, I couldn’t retrieve all the posts from the caches, and thus I am unable to make those stats complete. Maybe, just maybe, if we reach the 4th year, then the stats will be back.

And in the end, a very, very, very big Thank-You to you all. For being there to read my nonsense, and for being there to send me wishes and prayers whenever I requested for them. You are all rock stars! :)

MAN, i’m so glad you’re back! I came by diary-x a long, long time ago, JUST after the crash, and was like, WHOA. (“No data backup?! Holy freakin’ SMOLEY.”) I’d be devastated if I lost all my writing like that. Thank goodness for search engine caches, I s’pose. Also, you never did post about your new whereabouts on the diary-x “stay in touch”/”how to find a previous diary-xer” page, so you should do that, buddy, so people can continue stalking you. =)

Happy three-year anniversary, you rockstar. =) So glad to have you back, and with a lovely new layout, to boot.

Salam Alaaaikum chotey bhia…it is so GREAT to have you back in blogistan. Ever since you went missing, my compulsive behavioral disorders had started kicking in…

Very nice lay-out, and I love the idea of you opting for this Japanese rasm-ul-khat rather than your English one. Old age has little patience for non-conformistic lay-outs. :)

Oh, and while on the subject of old age, there is entirely too much white here, perhaps a font slightly larger would rectify it…but then, I am senile, and averse to anything that could be broadly defined as technology, or loosely called computer-kin. What do I know?

Oh, and do feel free to post more than once a month…

p.s. Re. your comment on my weblog: glad you liked the bubblegum sky. =) Lemme know if you want the original 1600×1200 version, since my flickr settings automatically resize my pics to 800×600 when uploading them.

Thanks for liking the design, everyone. Now I can, at last, think that my mark-up and CSS skills have improved. :D

Sadiya: Thanks!

Wild1: Oh yes! I have a spiritual attachment with apples! And the blog says thanks!

Yasmine: Search engines’ caches are life savers. At least in my blog’s case. And yep, I would surely like to have the high-res version of bubblegum sky for the desktop. And thanks! =)

Bhaijan: Wa-alaikum-us-Salam! And thanks a lot for your appreciative words, as usual :) The Japanese rasm-ul-khat thing made me scratch my head, though. Apologies for the font size being too small for you, but now that I tried to add a button to increase/decrease the font size, I have come to know that although my CSS skills have improved, they are not that good yet. I have added a dropdown box on the top of each page, through which the font size can be increased or decreased. However, it does not “remember” your preference, so you’ll have to specify it on every page you visit. Alternatively, you can use your browser’s built-in utility to increase the font size (which remembers it too). (In Firefox and Internet Explorer, go to View menu and then Text Size, and click the desired option).

And I will try my best to post twice a month.

Laura: :D

Saeed: Thank you, meray bhai!

H: Thanks!

Roush: Yep, I am doing good. Yourself? :)

Hi there,

You’ve got a good looking blog here! Love the design colours; the white background makes the text easy to read.

Glad that everything is working ok with wordpress. :)

Imagine my embarassment, not to mention consternation, when JB showed me that any font could be adjusted to my old-man’s eye-sight by simply holding down the cntrl key and turning that spinning wheel thing protuding right out of the mouse thingy….a day of steep learning curve by my standards!

One sort of figures out why JB hangs around me so much – its either his urge to potect the good old ignorant me, or feel better at my expense – the latter of course is more likely to be the case given his narcissism.

My one complaint addressed, I am compelled to declare this a wonderful lay-out, which I have noticed might also be called a template. A day of great learnings like I said.

Oh, and the Japanese rasm-ul-khat was an allusion, if far-fetched, to the vertical template (I catch on quick, see!) as compared to the earlier horizontal one.

:)

Bhaijan: Holding down Ctrl and then using the mouse’s wheel to adjust the font size is even a new thing for me… I used to hit + or – keys with Ctrl. But anyway, I am sure that you’ll be able to come up with some way to pay JB back (you learn quickly, right? :) ). And thanks for liking the Japanese rasm-ul-khat (I finally figured what that meant… I can be slow at times, you see).

Roush: Good to hear that too.

GPS: Talk about the world being small! Yes, I am the same Saadat who studied in GPS, who used to wear spectacles bigger than his face, and who used to mess his hairstyle every time he tried to comb it with his hand. Thanks a lot for liking Ulta Seedha and for the wishes too. Who are you, by the way? :)

Chotey bhai…whoever said anything about paying JB back! He is my spiritual ‘mis’guide, and as such it is in his JD to teach me stuff. His greatest satisfaction should come from the fact that I learn what he teaches, and put it to practice, with great discretion obviously, but of course he does not know that.

Besides, didn’t I teach him a thing or two about swerving in and out of highway traffic with one hand, while holding an intelligent conversation on the mobile with the other?

Glasses bigger than your face eh? That is so me! Now we know what is that qadr-e-mushtarik that binds us….

Of late, people tell me glasses I wear are much smaller than my face, which is such a load of baloney! Its the same glasses!

Saadat

Apr 14, 2006 at 9:15 am

No One: Thanks, and welcome back to you too! :)

GPS: Ah, right. Yes, I remember you :) BE in software engineering, that’s nice. I have done my BS in computer science, and nowadays just fooling around with all sorts of standardized tests. As for our classfellows: Hassan is busy in his final semester of telecom engineering; Khalid graduated with me, we were in the same class; Azhar has just graduated in CS too; Sajjad, I guess, went for computer engineering. Don’t know about the rest. And our school… well, yeah, I haven’t written anything about it or our teachers… I guess there was nothing ulta seedha about them :)

Anonymuis: I agree, this is better than diary-X… gives more control. But diary-X has been sort of my training camp. Thanks for dropping by. And oh, I do remember you, just vaguely. Your writing style is familiar :)

Bhaijan: You know, besides the bigger-than-our-faces glasses, we have another shared attribute: cutting around on the highway while participating in an (as you very rightly say) intelligent conversation. Now all I need to do is to find a Saab ki Gadi, and a friend like JB. I still have to be told though that my glasses are smaller than my face. Perhaps, when I reach your age?

Hmmm…you know what, you might just have a point there…you can take JB from me by the way. I would make that sacrifice for you. As for the car, Saab ki Gaadi was his car, and I would not dare try anything with SKG. That lesson was imparted in good old blackey.

As for those glasses getting smaller…I might have good news for you chotey bhai…I am always going to be older than you… I will always be ahead of you!

So, I guess those glasses ain’t shrinking for you!

Nadi: Thanks for liking the template :)

Imran: Gustakhi ki ma’afi chahta hon, janab-e-aali. Aainda khayal rakhnay ki har mumkin koshish karon ga! :D

Bhaijan: *sigh* I guess then I’ll have to bear my reflection in the mirror with those giant glasses. And an update is coming right up… on tomorrow morning, that is.

Saeed: No wonder you feel left out. A person who doesn’t understand the sacred nature of a ritual known as conversing on the phone while holding the steering with single hand should always feel left out. :P

GPS: Yeah, most of us have turned into computer freaks. And thanks for liking my writing style. I just copy the masters, you see. :)

Khawab: *hides, then replies in a weak voice* I’ll try to be regular, but as you must have noticed, my tries are not being fruitful.

No One: You have got a great new place!

Saad: Thanks, buddy!

Unaiza: Glad you liked it :)
